So as I quickly approach the dreaded age of 30, I asked myself if I have met or attempted to reach the goals I set out to reach before the big 3-0. I have mixed emotions as I had successfully launched my company Tony Enterprises which has helped many companies reach goals they normally wouldn’t be able to attain, but I always told myself by 30 I’d be selling off my latest innovative product/business and be nearing retirement (crazy right?). While I haven’t given up hope for those aspirations I came to realize more than ever I carried a weight around with me that I couldn’t describe. For a while, I played it off and continued my same old routine and then it clicked… I became what I feared most about getting old and that’s becoming a creative of habit/routine and put myself in a bubble. I was a walking – talking bubble boy. (well maybe not that extreme, but it sounded better than anything else I could come up with).

rawThe first thing that comes to mind is his bubble, but my point is aligning myself with his character is that he eventually becomes afraid of change or anything that isn’t part of his daily routine.

Many of you are commonly unhappy at your jobs, but you continue to stick it out as you rely on the job to financially support your lifestyle. The ideal response or course of action is to quit your job or begin interviewing at new jobs (many of you end up doing this).

For centuries Professional and Collegiate Sports Teams turned to Commercials and the occasional Billboard and Radio Advertisement to drive fans and new audiences to their upcoming events.

As Professional Sports Teams look for creative ways to attract new fans, many have turned to Social Media Marketing.

While many describe Social media marketing as the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites, I find it to be a way for companies to keep their fans and potential clients/customers engaged.

After sitting down and analyzing the current tactics by Professional Sports Team and Collegiate Athletic Programs, I recognized many have made missteps in tapping into their perspective markets.

Below are Social Media Marketing Tips for professional Sports Teams:

1. Each Social Media Platform Serves a Purpose

As we know it, Social Media Platforms continue to pop up and the masses flock to it leaving businesses an opportunity to communicate their marketing message. Each Social Media Platform serves it own unique purpose and can be utilized best by understanding its advantages.

Facebook:  By far the most flexible Social Media Platform as it allows Sports Teams to market fans with Videos, Pictures, Text and even interactive Contest. The Dallas Mavericks Facebook Page is a great example of how to use Facebook for Social Media Marketing.

They use Facebook to inform fans about:

  • Upcoming Games
  • Season Ticket Plans
  • Facts about Players
  • Promote their Sponsors
  • Update Fans on the Scores and Stats
  • Offers on Sports Team Apparel
The key to their success is being consistent in their delivery. While they often deliver different messages, they are keeping the “Dallas Mavericks” fresh in the minds of their fans.
Twitter: Twitter and sports fit together because sports are live, immediate, suspenseful, and fun—and these are qualities Twitter mirrors and enhances in real-time. Fans primarily use Twitter to they use to talk about games as they happen, therefore, give the fans something to talk about as the game goes on.

Instagram: Instagram gives Sports Organizations to express their marketing message on a visual medium. Many teams and players have utilized it to give fans a backstage pass into the players journey from initial practice through the playoffs. The key with Visual Marketing is to leave your audience wanting more, therefore, having a build up so fans will want to check back later.

The Strategy: Social Media Marketing is a great way to consistently market your audience without a repetitive Sales Pitch

2. You can share the same content on different channels, but present it in a way your fans want

As they say, there is no use in re-inventing the wheel and the same applies when using multiple Social Media platforms to deliver a message. The key is to make adjustments based on what audiences

3. Get Players Involved

Every sports fan has a favorite player, and it’s a dream come true for them to be able to interact with that player. On Thanksgiving, the Jets Facebook Page featured a video of cornerback Kyle Wilson wishing fans a happy Thanksgiving, which took all of six seconds for Wilson. On sports teams, the rosters are big enough so that players don’t even have to devote much time to make an impact — they can even record a ditty on a smartphone and send it to the social media team — and the payoff is excellent when it comes to fan engagement.

At the end of the day, Social Media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns.

Overcoming Professional Hurdles

Whether you’re 50, 25, or 35.. you probably have experienced a Professional Hurdle. Some of them have been traumatic, others have simply just been eye opening. For me, it was a bit of both, but it seemed to plague me and follow me to my next jobs.

Sound Familiar?

For those that can relate, are you still dwelling on that experience?

Finding it hard to move on? 

Overcoming Professional HurdlesYou’re not the only one, many of us hold onto those experiences either consciously or subconsciously. For me, it happened early on in my career with an abusive and manipulative boss. At first I was unsure what to think of it as he would make racial remarks like if it were part of our normal conversation. Then it transitioned to him making remarks about my lifestyle and weight.

Soon enough he was making it public via facebook about my work habits and my ethnicity. At first, I laughed it off and continued working as I knew I needed the job to make ends meet.

I have always been one to try to stick it out at a job because I am far from a quitter, but things took a turn for the worst when we decided to hold interviews for potential employees. One female was an obvious choice, but he insisted that this hire be attractive and fit. The obvious choice did not exactly fit that mold and he insisted that we see just how “BIG” she was. He paused the footage of her sitting on the couch and directed us to sit in the same position to see how much bigger she was then the staff.

To say the least, I was floored! 

What took me over the edge was a book I received from him right before a business trip. Seems innocent right? I thought the same until I opened it and read a message that reiterated why I needed to run to the next job ASAP.  He continued his abusive ways in this book and made me feel about an inch tall.

I shortly after, went on a job hunt and found a different job and happily left the company.

But go Figure, It doesn’t end there!

he continues his abusive and defaming ways on Facebook and his beloved blog. Even after a year , he still continued to rant about my race and how I was the worst employee.

23 at the time, I didn’t understand what would possess someone to do this to someone. Like many of you reading this, you are trying to rationalize the behavior, but I myself tried to as well and came up blank.

Unfortunately, I carried this traumatic experience to my next job and took constructive criticism the wrong way and it rubbed management the wrong way. I never let it affect my performance in sales as I always hungry to be the best, but my relationship suffered because I constantly saw the lunatic.

I say all that to say this, changing jobs will not make things go away and getting over a professional hurdle is not as simple as forgetting it ever happened.

Until recently I hadn’t been able to overcome this Professional Hurdle, but I finally got some of the best advice from my amazing mom who told me that only I can allow it to stick around.

  • Confront what is bothering you
  • understand that its in the past
  • Recognize you had no control over it.
  • Actions like his are simply cries of his unhappiness in his life.

Hope this has helped you in your current Professional Hurdle. Do not let one person or company slow you down!

Being Successful in Sales in this Down Market

Whether this is Day 1 or Day 365 of doing Sales, we all find ourselves overwhelmed in the idea of having to meet certain goals/quotas and being to succeed in this Upside-Down Market. From someone who has been doing sales from over 9 years, I have been there when the market was amazing and you could Sale a 60 yr old lady on gym membership she doesn’t need to not being able to give away free trials or products.

The fact of the matter is SALES has CHANGED. You no longer can make Cold-Calls and expect people to be on the phone for 5 minutes in order to hear your pitch. The reality is technology has actually hurt some of the old school sales tactics, with caller-id and screening calls. But technology has also become our friend as we can now use it to improve our Sales Pitch i.e. looking up their company and have talking points.

With that being said…

To Be Successful in Sales in this Upside Market takes several Skills: 

1. Have a Complete Understanding of Your Product Offering 

The Idea that you know your companies offering “Well-Enough” doesn’t cut it anymore. You have to know the in’s and out’s of every offering and how it can benefit the customer. Putting a customer on hold to ask a 100 questions is definitely a way to get a customer disinterested. Society has really pushed consumers to expect immediate answers, so be prepared to answer those tough questions.

2. Be Professional and Friendly

Too many Sales people get annoyed by their previous call or lost sale, but you have to like a pitcher and have a short memory. Remember, a salesperson is somewhat of a savior to a business. You’re essentially resolving some type of under-performing or broken part of their business.

Ever notice how nice mechanics are even when they are screwing you over? Its because they know, a person can be charmed over with a smile and friendly-helpful advice.

3. Be Creative

Salespeople are a dime a dozen today. Everyone claims to be the master of sales, yet their portfolio of closed sales is about 2 people long. Why? Because they are trying to be just like everyone else. Being creative in sales is KEY!

So how do you get creative? Find new approaches to interacting with a customer. The same old lead in everyone uses, squash it a use a friendly more personable approach. Everyone knows you read a script, make the conversation natural and you will see them stay on the phone an extra 15 minutes.

4. Have a Purpose

Ever just go through the motions and call a customer and forget why you called or even just hope they say no? Well chances are you don’t have a purpose for your call. This typically occurs when the sales professional is asked to follow up on COLD or CRAP leads. If you expect the call to go “No-where” it is. So set out a purpose for your call… For instance:

At my last company, I recognized there was an opportunity to double dip (an opportunity to make money off existing customers) so I took the initiative to reach out to customers at least once or twice to see how their services were going. Naturally they had gripes which I was able to answer with our NEW SERVICES… $$$$$$ Yes that equaled money. Going back to being creative, A Sale is a Sale.

5. Follow up like a Doctor

Doctors are often your best salespeople because they have the best follow up in the business. They will track you down across the United States to let you know your appointment is at 5pm and to see how you have you been since their last check up. The call really means:

SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

They drive a pricey car because of you, not because they know how to perform highly difficult procedures. Having those skills are great, but if they do not have customers, it all means NOTHING.

So the moral here is to follow up!!! Make yourself a note, create an alarm on your phone, put sticky notes everywhere… Whatever you have to do.

6. Be Accessible

The name of the game is to close sales right? How can you if your customer needs you on Saturday? Yes I know, you need time off, I understand, but time is money and clients will move on the minute they forget that NEED for your product. In this market, it is key to be available and if your not, make sure you follow up with an apology for not, so they know that they are your first priority.

This is a look in at how I have succeeded in Sales as the market has practically taken a dump.

Businesses are still looking for answers to their problems, the question is will you SELL them on your PRODUCT can solve that Problem?

Being successful in sales does not come easy, but these tips will definitely get you ahead.

How the WNBA Can Grow and Reach New Fans

Growing the WNBA

With Basketball becoming one of the forefront sports across the country, its time for the WNBA to get the love and recognition it deserves. The league undoubtedly has taken a back seat in the professional sports world and has experienced some early growing pains.

Many point to the fact that its a female professional sport, but those rebuttals can quickly be put to rest as we have seen female soccer take off over the past 5-6 years.

So where can the WNBA Improve and Reach New Fans? 

WNBA Marketing

As we know marketing can make or break any professional company. Most companies struggle with targeting their market and capitalizing once they have their attention (if they get that far). The WNBA has been able to tap into that market, but I believe hasn’t been able to maintain their level of interest, mainly due to the lack of viral marketing (reminders of games and special guest in attendance). While its hard to compare the league to the NBA, its the only plausible comparison researchers like myself can draw from.

The WNBA must begin to market their special events (Latin Night, Special Performances, Possible Players reaching Records and surpassing them, Big Match-ups). The goal is here is to make the league seem larger than life and draw attention to the “entertain” aspect of the game. The Key to Professional Sports is to exploit that it is first and foremost an entertainment and second a sport. Yes that sounds backwards, but fans attend a game primarily for the entertainment factor. Reminding fans of the experience and talent they will be watching will draw fans to at-least attend 1 game. Once you have fans/consumers at games, you must engage them with entertainment so find ways to partner with local talent or big stars to make appearances and possible autograph signings. (I will expand on this with WNBA Partnerships).

WNBA Visibility

Currently the average WNBA fan must have NBA TV, a premium channel on most cable networks. What does this scream? Limited Visibility of the Talented WNBA Players! If you cannot draw interest to the fans sitting at home, how can you draw them to a game? The NBA has grown internationally because of the level of visibility via the internet and television. Granted the NBA has a tremendous amount of growth and history behind it, but the key behind it all is VISIBILITY.

The WNBA must go back to the drawing board and figure out how they can get more air time on ESPN, ABC, FOX or any other cable channel that will allow their “target market” to see what the WNBA has to offer in 2012. Visibility will remind fans just how talented the players are today in the WNBA.

WNBA Partnerships

Strategic Partnerships are key for the WNBA to grow in this rough economy. With the NBA as their best friends, they must build on the fact that many of their fans are their target market. Having NBA Players make appearances and promote the WNBA and their entreprenuerial endeavors will benefit both parties. For Instance, Dwyane Wade is currently traveling the US promoting his newest book A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball. This is perfect partnership for the WNBA and Dwyane Wade as they can both benefit on the media exposure as well as the revenue they can both draw.

Having Player appearances will draw in their target market and remind fans that the WNBA is everything basketball. Also bringing in special Performing Guest for the Half-Time Show will be huge. The NBA has really under-estimated of a good half-time entertain as most fans take this time to visit the surrounding vendors (do not want to take from this revenue), but fans also typically leave right before half- time. Keeping them there is key with half time performances by star singers or performers.

WNBA Mini-Series

Time to get Viral WNBA! Get a camera crew and start a WNBA Mini-Series. Fans would love to see what WNBA Players must do day in and day out to be a Professional Basketball Player. This will draw an incredible amount of interest by not only fans, but also endorsers. Reminding Fans just how incredible these females are will bring money back in the pockets of the WNBA Teams and Players.

In this Technology driven world, Professional Sports Team and Leagues must embrace the internet and learn how to profit from it. Using creative methods of marketing will continue to draw interest with fans and possible new markets.

These are my few suggestions for the WNBA to build and grow to a dominate professional Sport.

How to Turn Around Ochocinco’s “Hard Knock” Life

As athletes build their career on the field, many forget how important it is to build their career off the field. Chad Johnson is one of the few players that has perfected the craft of captivating fans all across the world.

Many turn to his dazzling play on the field as to why he has gained such popularity but those that have followed his career credit his originality and activity on twitter as the propellant for his career.

Unfortunately, his career has taken a turn for the worst as he was recently arrested for allegedly head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada. This only was the start as shortly after he was cut from the Miami Dolphins and as well as cut from his recent sponsor Zico.

While many would find this to be a low point, I find this to be a time where can rebrand himself and remind fans why he has been #1 to so many for so long. So that begs the question, whats the strategy?

I would first publicly thank all your fans as well as sponsors for believing in you.  Johnson still currently has endorsements with Reebok, Degree Deodorant, Wonderful Pistachios as well as an iPhone moble app game.

To thank those Endorsements as well as remind NFL Scouts that he can still compete:

  1. I would hire a film crew that would follow me throughout my journey to get back into the NFL. Essentially recording every workout, practice, training session and while they are filming make sure to exclusively promote the products that have endorsed you and have stayed by your side. I would post all the exclusive footage on Youtube Channel where cans and scouts can follow you.
  2. I would also have the film crew follow you as you spend time with your family. The goal here is to not only show your dedication to the game of football, but also your dedication to keep your family happy and motivated. (This all goes back to public perception of you not being a “family man“)
  3. I would continue to be active on twitter, but with a goal of showing fans love and staying away from any rash statements that may trigger alarms to potential NFL teams. Reports have surfaced that NFL teams are watching his twitter account making sure he does not bring anymore “unwanted” attention his way.
  4. My next suggestion would be to continue to expand your side ventures. Building your brand outside of the football is critical as you approach the end of your career in the NFL. Growing OCNN Report as well as your recently announced Watch Collection is key!

These are just a few suggestions that I would give Chad Johnson and his team as they get through the media storm. Reminding analyst, writers and fans what his true values are as well as what his goals are will help change the headlines and hearts.

Reshaping and Rebuilding the Image of UCF Athletics

UCF Marketing

Many UCF fans have been watching the Headline as the NCAA hands out its penalty which force Central Florida to sit out the postseason for a year in men’s basketball and football. After major recruiting violations were uncovered, both programs have not only suffered the consequences for possible post-season appearances, but also have slowly lost potential recruits along with current players. It was recently announced that  Josh Crittle and C.J. Reed will be transferring from UCF to take their talents to other Universities. For the University, this is a tremendous blow as it presents and promotes a potentially failing system.

With all that being said, It is time for UCF to Respond with….. Positive Press! 

Okay, I am stating the obvious there, but below I have put together a Plan of Action that will help rebuild their image.

So while the average University would normally release a statement expressing their plans to make changes and improve the image of the Athletic Department, as the saying goes…..

Actions Speak Louder than Words

With that being said, As UCF Celebrates their 50th Anniversary, its the perfect time for them to hold a UCF Rally.

The Goal here is to rally Fans, Media and Sponsors together for a celebration of UCF Athletics.

So lets break it down the game plan:

1. To highlight the accomplishments and success of UCF Athletics I would gather Former UCF Athletes like Josh Peppers, Kevin Smith, Jermaine Taylor and Brandon Marshall (if possible) to have them speak about their experiences as an athlete at the University of Central Florida.

2. The key here is to remind not only fans, but more importantly incoming and potential recruits that may see footage of this event that UCF Athletics has provided athletes of all sports a gateway to professional sports as well as a professional job.

3. I would take this UCF Rally also as an opportunity to get fans excited about this Upcoming Athletic Season. While the Football and Basketball Program will not be able participate in the post season, it is still critical that we recognize these athletes for their accomplishments throughout the season and getting fans excited about the upcoming games is a great way to get Athletes excited and looking towards the light at the end of the tunnel. (since there are no postseason possibilities)

4. I would also continue the segments I saw posted by Eric DeSalvo who is the Assistant Director of Athletics Communications. These segments have followed UCF Athletes throughout their journey of becoming an Elite Athlete. (**Continuing to Highlight the Athletes, not the programs that were at fault)

5. I would also take a page out the DeVos Sports Management book and begin to give back to the Surrounding Orlando Community. Gather UCF Basketball Players and Football Players for Community Events in the Area. For Instance, The DeVos Program the past several years has made trips to New Orleans to Help rebuild homes. It would be great to the see UCF Athletes doing the same in the Orlando Area.

6. Lastly, I would put together a strategic marketing plan that would highlight UCF Athletes that not only perform well in their sport, but also in the Classroom. This is critical for parents to see as they help their student-athletes decide what university to choose. ( A balance of Sports and Education here)

………..Not to be forgotten is the Legendary Tweet by Mr. Keith Clanton. I believe UCF Should highlight his loyalty and even use it as part of their Marketing for UCF Basketball.

For Example: I would love to see Ads or T-Shirts that had:

“The Tweet Heard Round the World, followed by Keith Clanton’s tweet to remain a UCF Knight.”

Possibly even a shirt that demonstates his recent kind words of the programs:

“UCF is where my heart was at,” Clanton said. “At the end of the day, I felt like UCF was the best place for me. I felt like the coaching staff and the players, I can trust everybody. And then knowing what we have as a team still here, I still feel like we have a chance to accomplish a lot.”

So The Glaring Question is this is a lot to do for just UCF Athletics, Why so much emphasis on Sports

Lets face it, While good Educational Programs are the backbone of most Colleges, Sports are the foundation that help raise awareness of their Educational achievements.

My point here is that UCF currently has an amazing educational program and students are beginning to recognize that, but in order for top athletes to truly commit to UCF there must be a positive and impactful Athletic program.

Rebuilding the Image of UCF Athletics should be first priority as it will continue to lure High Caliber Athletes and as well as High Caliber Students.

Jameer Nelson Recent ESPN Interview Should Have Magic Fans Excited

Orlando Magic fans can slowly creep out of their depression hole as they recently announced the Orlando Magic Head Coach will be Jacque Vaughn, former assistant Coach for the San Antonio Spurs under Gregg Popovich. On Wednesday, Orlando Magic fans had even more to cheer about as recently signed Point Guard Jameer Nelson paid a visit to the David Baumann Show where he expressed how excited he is to be with the Orlando Magic for possibly the next 3 years.

For those that had never heard Jameer Nelson behind the Mic, he was very politically correct and was a shining example of how athletes should conduct themselves when being interviewed. During the interview, He was happy to discuss his recent contract,why the terms have been private, his plan to remain a Magic player even though he did opt out, as well as his stance on the recent Head Coach hire.

Don’t let the tattoo’s fool you, Companies in Orlando, now is the time to jump on the Jameer train and Book Jameer Nelson for an appearance, endorsement or a speaking engagement as this year will be breakout year especially with the current roster the Magic have. If you are looking for an athlete with no baggage, Jameer Nelson is your man.

To those unfamiliar with the history of Jameer Nelson, he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets, but immediately came over to the Orlando Magic which he now calls home. He has definitely embraced his home as Orlando Magic fans have expressed that he is very welcoming when approached around the city and embraces the city. His love for the game and positive attitude can help turn around the sour taste Magic fans currently have towards the Organization as well as its currently stance with Dwight Howard.

After hearing the interview with Jameer Nelson, I definitely foresee him becoming apart of the Orlando Magic Organization after he retires from the game. His knowledge along with his leadership can definitely prove to be beneficial to the Orlando Magic Front office.

NBA Rookie Anthony Davis is a Marketing and Branding Genius in the Making

Mr. Uni-brow aka Mr. Kentucky Basketball himself Anthony Davis was officially named a member of the 2012 USA Basketball Men’s National Team & 2012 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team. This announcements came a day after his performance at the USA Basketball Exhibition versus the Dominican Republic where he displayed his array of skills.

Davis put on quite the show in the 4th quarter for his former Coach, John Calipari, who is currently coaching the Dominican Basketball Team. As the game played on, Anthony Davis proved to the world again why he is not only one of the best players in the nation, but also one of the most marketable players.

After running down the floor and receiving a pass from one his teammates, Anthony lines up a Three-pointer and sinks it. His showman ship came alive with a signal to the USA Basketball Bench as well as a smile to Former Head Coach John Calipari. The cameras and fans ate it up and truly became the highlight of the night.

While many fans recognize him for his unique and recently trademarked eye-brows, he also is quite the entertainer on the court. Add those up with his lovable personality and you have an Athlete Destined for Endorsement Heaven.

This will prove to be his shining moment, as he will have the entire world watching him during the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Expect him to flourish on the big stage much like he did during the 2012 NCAA Championship Game.

As a branding consultant, I would touch Anthony Davis image as he is on track for stardom and fast. Staying away from the club scene and keeping his child like attitude will bring in all the endorsements he could ever dream of.

Does All The Dwight Howard Trade Talk Increase His Visibility For Potential Sponsors?

I constant preach how important timely marketing is for every company to leverage and study, but how about for Athletes. Right now, Dwight Howard is the talk of the nation, in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if President Barack Obama is discussing trade possibilities. With that being said, If I were a slow growing company looking to branch into a new market, a Dwight Howard endorsement deal would be right up my alley.

Am I sounding a bit crazy with that statement? Slightly, but think about it, how long will folks be talking about Dwight. Realistically speaking it will be another year before fans truly get over this fiasco, but as it is right now when you think Dwight Howard, you automatically picture him in his Superman Cape with a decked out Adidas outfit. Talk about product placement and one hell of an endorsement deal!

Just a few days ago I blogged about Dwight Howard’s image and if he could ever repair it, and unfortunately, I am not sure anything will repair it, not even a championship with the Brooklyn Nets, but in the grand scheme he could be taking advantage of this media coverage. As we found out this morning on the David Baumann Show, he camp has informed him to stay low and just recover from his recent surgery.

Being able to capitalize when all eyes are on you is when its the time to strike.
